WHAT STYLEZ THINKS ABOUT => Laptop Batteries #BatteryLife
So What Does STYLEZ Think?
As an IT Administrator, I have been asked A LOT of questions! And if they are IT related, I usually have answers ... hence the ASK WILLIE STYLEZ! But a few questions that have always been difficult for me to answer, concern Laptop Batteries and battery life! I must say, there is a lot of mystery surrounding these small, but very significant, devices that power our STUFF! So I went on a search this morning and found a most INTERESTING website! It has a GREAT FAQ for Batteries that clears up a lot of the mysteries about the subject! So, with no further ado:
How to care for your new laptop batteryCondition your new laptop computer battery for optimum performanceA new laptop battery must be conditioned to operate at its full capacity.
New replacement laptop batteries from LaptopBatteryExpress.com are shipped in a discharged state and must be fully charged when you receive your new battery. Charging your new battery overnight is sufficient to give your new battery a full charge. A new laptop battery must be partially discharged and fully charged at least five times in order to reach its full capacity.
This is done simply by unplugging the laptop from the power cord and letting the battery operate the laptop for 30 min. to 1 hour. It is important not to let a brand-new battery discharge completely to empty or the battery pack may not be able to be recharged by the laptop. This can effectively destroy your brand-new battery. The conditioning process should be completed within the first month you receive your new battery. The conditioning process can be completed during the first week of receiving your new notebook battery. How can I extend the Lifetime of my laptop battery?Li-ion laptop batteries will wear out slowly over time, providing ever shorter battery run times. You can extend the life of your battery by providing some basic ongoing maintenance. Your new battery should be charged and discharged 3-4 times during the first month. This will properly engage the battery to hold it's maximum energy. After the first month you can maintain the battery energy capacity by discharging and recharging the battery every 3-4 weeks. Do not let the battery run down all the way as this will diminish your battery life over time.
A new battery may cause the battery power icon on your computer to indicate you have a low battery condition. We recommend that you let the battery charge overnight in your notebook computer. It may be necessary to remove and replace the battery and restart your computer with the battery installed in order for the computerís start up sequence to properly recognize your new battery.Rechargeable batteries will self discharge when not in use over a period of time.ï This might seem obvious but donít burn, disassemble, mutilate or short circuit batteries.
WHAT STYLEZ THINKS ABOUT => Upgrading to Google's ANDROID OS!
I received a message from a friend today asking what I thought of Android OS and if I felt she should upgrade to a new Android phone or keep up with Windows Mobile. Here was her request:
Can you give me the pros and cons for a windows smartphone vs and android? Right now I can sync my phone to outlook and update my calendar (doc appointments, etc) I like that. Can I still do the same on an Android? Is it windows compatible or should I just stick with a smartphone?
This is my response:
Android is THE BOMB!!!! I use BOTH an Android (currently 2.1, but just installed 2.2 update) and a WinMO 6.5 w/ HTC Sense 2.5! So I understand the hesitation. Let's address your main concerns:
1. Windows Compatibility... technically NEITHER mobile OS is COMPATIBLE to Windows XP/Vista/7. Because they cannot SHARE the same programs. i.e. iPhones and iPad are COMPATIBLE because they can share apps. However, YES they BOTH can communicate and be synced with Windows OS.
2. Oulook - (Im assuming you mean, ONLY mean calendar, contacts, etc) due to some unusual programmings on Google's side, you have a few options here. You can use Google's Calendar Sync (which works GREAT) to sync Outlook & an online Google Calendar. Or you can use Kayxo KiGoo to sync both the Calendar AND Contacts (http://icio.us/b2axyt)
3. Apps - you didnt mention this, but I like to anyway. I LOVE my WinMO because it was the ONE OF THE ORIGINAL mobile computer to handle applications, tools, etc. iPhones DID NOT originate, yes, they made it easier to locate and acquire apps, but WinMO has been doing it since late 1990s! Anyway, but just like iPhones, Android has a GREAT app marketplace and a HUGE (and growing) list of awesome and useful apps!
I would DEFINITELY recommend purchasing an Android phone! There are SO MANY to choose from (I personally recommend Motorola DROID (original, X or 2), HTC EVO 4G, Samsung's new model or T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide). And this mobile OS is here to stay!!!
PROS & CONS:
Windows Mobile:
Pros - I would say familiarity, but, because no two WinMO phones are EXACTLY alike (unless you have HTC already and get another HTC), the interface is not ALWAYS the same. GREAT community support for most phones and devices. ULTIMATE compatibility with Windows, Linux and Apple PCs. Most come with a physical keyboard, but a slew of units are now available with full Touchscreen only (and multi-touch too). THOUSANDS of apps and software tools available. Huge selection of phones and devices available at different price points, discounts and deals. Flash (via app, Skyfire Browser) and multitasking.
Cons - some phones suffer from (compared to Android and iPhone) performance issues, glitches or are just slower than the competition. New app marketplace only available on some phones but is also VERY inadequate compared to Android & iPhone.
Android Mobile:
Pros - (in general) familiarity. There are currently only about 2 types of Android interfaces (maybe 3 if you count the semi custom Droid X interface), one from HTC and then the stock interface from Google. But even with those two, there are a only a few differences so you can jump from one phone to the next (so far) and be able to use it with no learning curve. The app marketplace is GREAT and very usable (even more now with categories and per app auto updates). Flash and multi tasking. GREAT performance and speed across the board. New functionality and bug fixes are done throughout the year and available on (most) phones (they actually listen to their consumers requests, UNLIKE Apple!). GREAT syncing with Google & Gmail online accounts.
Cons - lots of updates for apps (but mainly because most of the apps and tools are new and technically beta), multiple OS updates per year (not really a CON for most ppl, but some ppl dont like this feature. but again, like the apps, the OS is also pretty new and new functionality and bug fixes are done throughout the year instead of only once per year). 3rd party apps (but a couple are free) are needed to bring Outlook Syncing up to par with WinMO.
That's What Stylez Thinks! What do you think? Please Comment!
WILLIE STYLEZ TECH REVIEW: HP DreamScreen - IS IT "More than just a photo frame" (I think we have Marketing Liars)
Reminds me of Sony DASH but slimmer and already (far as I know) offering more content/software. {{turns out this is NOT the case, see below}} I wouldn't mind having one... if it weren't for the fact that I have a Moto DROID and a desk stand that makes my DROID do all the things this does AND MORE! SMH! I LOVE Technology! But I think the price point "excuse" for using 800x480 would be acceptable IF the unit only cost $100! But we would come out better buying a Dell Mini 10 for $300 & doing A LOT MORE than this thing can do! Yes, it would not be touchscreen... but WHO CARES! PLUS with another $200, you could get the iPad (I shutter to think I'd ever buy one of those) and still get a similar screen size with better resolution & again MORE FUNCTIONALITY AND multitouch (which I'm sure this digital frame will lack)! So this price point is probably going to KILL this device! Good luck HP... NOT!
As I stated a little earlier, turns out this thing is NOT all that HP's Marketing Dept cracked it up to be!!! Read this excerpt from a review I found on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/review/R3I6X6BID4QQFM/ref=cm_cr_rev_detup_redir?_encodi...):
Downright Lies
--------------The following quotes are from the HP site itself:
"The HP DreamScreen is a gateway to the Internet using your wireless network to access
weather info, Snapfish and your favorite web destinations."This is just untrue. There is no integrated web browser. It has three web `apps' on it: SnapFish, Pandora, Facebook. That's it. It does not read RSS feeds, or do much of anything you probably want it to do, simple things like display news or recipes.
"Stay current with social network sites like Facebook"
`Like' facebook? There is only Facebook: nothing else.
"Be organized with a built-in alarm clock & calendar."
This is laughable. Wondering how to sync the calendar with outlook or google or anything; maybe even just add appointments, I finally consulted their online documentation. Here, seriously, is the feature list for the calendar `app':
"View the current month, press right or left to view the next or previous month."
BWAH HA HA HA... *sigh*
"Touch-enabled controls--Get fast, easy access to information and entertainment with simple touch controls embedded in the display"
This is referring to some buttons around the bezel of the screen and is just so untrue they would have to change the marketing campaign in Europe or get sued. This does however remind me of the old In Living Color sketch where the handcapped superhero always says he is `not handicapped, but HANDY-CAPABLE!'.
"Videos--Watch home movies and video clips in full screen - Its simple!"
It's as simple as taking your video, recompressing it to a supported video codec, resizing it to a specific resolution, and then physically transferring it ot the device -so simple grandma could do it! (with gordian knot, virtualdub, CCCP, and all those other video tools she has)
